Lagos State Governor, Babijide Raji Sanwo-Olu shuns child labour on construction sites

The Lagos State Government has urged landowners and developers to stop employing children as building site workers.

Kehinde Osinaike, the general manager of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, made the call, according to a statement released on Sunday, while discussing the results of an enforcement operation conducted by the Monitoring and Compliance Unit of the LASPPPA. He maintained that the trend is typical of most construction sites throughout the state.

I call on landowners and developers to stop employing youngsters as laborers on their construction projects, he added. The authorities condemn this heinous act since it amounts to child abuse.

In addition to depriving them of their youth and exposing them to demanding work that is bad for their mental, physical, social, and moral health, child abuse and exploitation have detrimental impacts on children.

Before beginning any project, property owners and developers in the state should always seek the advice of seasoned professionals in the built sector to avoid utilizing quacks.

Iyiola Olarinde, the director of the Monitoring and Compliance Unit, concurred with this advice and suggested that employers take security and safety at building sites seriously.
