The President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmed Lawan, has taken an unusual stance against the government, and has backed the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over their demands for payment of full salaries.
ASUU has been protesting the half pay the Nigerian Government paid its members for October.
Lawan made this call in Maiduguri on Thursday. He said:
“Even if it means that the National Assembly will reduce sitting allowances or be paid on casual allowances basis whenever they sit at the lower and upper chambers, by cutting the recurrent expenditure in the budget of the federal lawmakers to settle the ASUU arrears, let it be”.
Coming from a Nigerian lawmaker, this is really shocking and amazing at the same time.
Nigerian lawmakers are some of the best paid globally, juxtaposed in a country that is described as the poverty capital of the world.
